It's the cats that notice the young man lingering. All six of them rush down the walk to start mewling and rubbing against his legs. It is when the one on his lap jumps away abruptly that pulls Tom's attention up from the book. The book is set aside as he becomes curious about why the cats are harassing this particular young man on the from walk.
Despite age, when Tom stands to walk toward the sidewalk it is easy to see a bit of Ziggy in this man. It's mostly the mismatched eyes and the overly friendly and mildly mischievous smile.
"Can I help you?" He's friendly and interested in why this particular man is half way up his walk in indecision. He can imagine a few reasons, all of which deal with his son.
